Epidural Steroid Injections
Program Code: 9867
Subscriptions: EmmiEngage, EmmiPrep, Faith-Based EmmiEngage
Main changes:
- Harmonized content with UpToDate (UTD) and Clinical Drug Information (CDI)
- Edited language around NPO to be less concrete before surgery. According to UTD and CDI, this information is often not relevant for an epidural steroid injection.
- Softened language about needing someone to drive them home after the procedure. According to UTD and CDI, many patients are able to drive home after the procedure. However, if a patient has sedation, they won’t be able to and need to plan accordingly.
- Qualified language around IV sedation to clarify that it is not offered in common practice. Added information about oral sedatives with the understanding that they aren’t commonly offered either.
- Streamlined information provided in the After Your Procedure section and made all timeframes around healing more general to avoid setting unrealistic patient expectations.
- Updated the signs of stroke in the risk section to align with BEFAST guidelines.
- Updated content with AMR feedback
- Edited information around how epidural steroid injections relieve pain for accuracy. Script now clarifies that the injection reduces the inflammation of the surrounding discs and other tissue, as well as the nerve.
- Deleted specific timeframes around when to expect pain relief after surgery and instead, kept the script more general to avoid contradicting the surgeon’s information.
- Updated script to more accurately reflect the role of a PT in the treatment of back and neck pain.
- In the alternatives section, clarified that oral steroids are only prescribed for a limited duration and as initial treatment for some conditions.
